ULTRAVIOLET (DVD Review) - 1/7//06
Despite being royally panned all round I thought this was a clever and different slice of sci-fi action by the Director of "Equilibrium" Kurt Wimmer and several strong parallels can be seen between that film and this. Similar to "Aeon Flux" but this is the better film; we get Milla Jovovich as a version of an even more extreme arse kicking futuristic Sydney Bristow from TV's "Alias" all skin tight costumes with multi-colour hair and an attitude to match. One of the major stand out scenes is the shoot out in the library when at the end of the scene we get slivers of paper shredded by gunfire slowly drifting to the floor in slow motion like an indoor snow storm. The comic roots base of the film can be clearly seen and coming across like a high octane thrill ride it's video game base is also assured; as slick visuals flash, by it's hard to tell what's green screen and what's CGI? Flawlessly blended into the mix is a slew of gunplay, martial arts and action, backed up with stunts and explosions galore. The pretty basic plot is there like a coat hanger just something to hang the story on and you don't really need much more than that.
SPECIAL FEATURES: This is the Region 1 (USA) Unrated Extended Cut with approx 7 minutes of extra footage cut from the theatrical R Rated Version. Feature Commentary with Milla Jovovich. "UV Protection" Making Ultraviolet - A behind the scenes glimpse at the background to the film. Especially interesting because it shows the film maker's filming in Shanghai for the background setting of futuristic buildings and the mixing of sets and green screen to create the Visual FX.
